In the past, workers at height used energy-absorbing lanyards attached to anchor points
to protect yourself from falls. As equipment has evolved, tool lanyard lifelines have been added to the range of fall protection equipment. Tool lanyard lifelines have distinct advantages over lanyards, but they are advantages over lanyards, but they are more expensive. Over time, they have become shorter for personal use.
Compared to their predecessors, these new personal lifelines are shorter and lighter, and some are designed to attach directly to the user's harness.

At loading and unloading points where it must be possible to remove the anchor point, in technical installations with a low drop depth or for maintenance of aircraft, trucks or technical installations, it is often not possible to use a fixed device.
