Safety and construction helmet: personal protective equipment

A 30% decrease in head injury accidents on construction sites has been observed in recent years, when the use of helmets on construction sites has become mandatory. This was a very useful measure for the workers. Working on a construction site is highly risky, but not wearing a helmet is very dangerous for the site user.
The only way to limit the loss of life on construction sites and to reduce the number of head injuries, especially on construction sites, is to wear a construction helmet. Protects the user against the risks of falling and flying objects on industrial and other construction sites. The construction helmet is therefore essential to avoid certain risks. But it should be noted that a given helmet is made for a certain risk. In other words, one type of helmet generally protects against one type of risk.

A helmet for a risk

Each business sector is confronted with one or more specific risks. The helmets are then specified according to the risk associated with the activity. In the construction sector, workers are more often faced with the risk of falling or being thrown by objects. For his own safety, the worker must use a very resistant helmet. Usually these are helmets. In other industries such as plumbing, auto maintenance and DIY, safety helmets are used. They protect the head when something hits. They are light in weight and provide comfort to the worker. They can be called "shock helmets". For workers in the electrical sector, helmets called "electrician helmets" are used to protect them from possible electrification hazards. Each work camp has its own type of helmet. What are helmets made of?

The components and the life span of the helmets

There are three main components of a helmet. These are: the shell, the harness and the chin strap. The shell is the outer part of the helmet. This is the part that gets the first shocks. The harness however is inside. Its role is to keep the helmet balanced on the head, it also participates in shock absorption. Finally, the chin strap is located at the height of the chin for perfect helmet balance.

Like all equipment, helmets have a period of time to be renewed. They can deteriorate following exposure to the sun, impact or the appearance of some cracks. The manufacturer should give advance notice of the duration or end-of-use date through a notice. Some helmets have a life span of 60 months, i.e. those made of polyester. Others have a shelf life of 48 months, those made of polyamide. And finally, some have a life span of 36 months, those made of polyethylene. But these periods are purely theoretical, because everything depends on how they are used and above all on maintenance. There are several standards for specifying helmets..

Regulations and standards

There are regulations governing helmets. Any helmet produced by a factory is checked before being put on the market. So, as mentioned before, it depends on the field of activity in which a particular helmet is used. There are three main areas:
- Helmets for general use: these helmets must comply with the EN 397 standards. They offer good visibility, are very light and easy to wear. Protects against impacts with the skull.
- High performance helmets: must comply with EN 397 standards. They have high resistance, protect against punctures, really heavy impacts.
- Insulating protective helmets: they comply with the EN 50 365 standard.
